The best of recent night's AllSky Camera images, which may or may not include some aurora australis activity. Coronal Mass Ejections and Solar flares regularly blast streams of charged particles away from the surface of the Sun, into the solar wind. If the Earth is in the path of these high-energy particles, which can take several days to reach the Earth, they may be directed by the Earth's magnetic field until they collide with atoms in the atmosphere. These collisions generate the graceful lights which are observed as the aurora. The patterns and shapes of the aurora are determined by the changing flow of charged particles and the varying magnetic fields.
Auroras are most commonly visible at high northern or high southern latitudes. At times when the Earth is most affected by activity on the Sun, they can be seen at lower latitudes such as Middleton, South Australia.
